Starting to Pray: What if I don't believe?

In this episode, filmed at the beautiful Church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome, we reflect on the journey of starting to pray—even if you struggle with belief. Prayer isn’t about having perfect faith; it’s about opening your heart to the possibility of God’s presence in your life. Like this church, which serves as a bridge between Rome’s history and faith, prayer can be a first step toward discovering or rediscovering a relationship with God.

If belief feels distant, start with honesty. Bring your questions, doubts, and hopes to prayer. God meets us where we are, even in our uncertainty. As we approach the Jubilee Year, this is the perfect time to take that first step, trusting that God is always listening, even if we’re not sure how to speak to Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. If you’re uncertain about belief, how can prayer be a way to honestly explore your thoughts and feelings about God?
  2. As the Jubilee invites us to renewal, what small step can you take to make space for prayer in your life?
  3. How can being honest in your prayers help you grow, even in times of doubt or uncertainty?
