The Magnificent Mosaics and Medieval Marvels of Santa Maria in Trastevere
The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of Rome’s earliest Christian churches, was likely founded by Pope Callixtus I and completed by Saint Julius I in 340. Rebuilt in the 12th century, it features notable 13th-century mosaics by Pietro Cavallini and a 12th-century bell tower.
The portico, revamped by Carlo Fontana, displays ancient friezes and Christian inscriptions. Inside, highlights include a gilded ceiling by Domenichino, 13th-century mosaics, and the 6th-century Madonna della Clemens.
