The Church on the highest summit of the Capitoline Hill
This Church is right by the Roman Forum, specifically the Forum of Caesar. It is on the highest summit of the Capitoline Hill (meaning altar of Heaven) to honor the Virgin Mary. The staircases, designed by architect Vignola, lead you to the entrance with a cross above the door to remember an earthquake that happened in 1703. You can also find another entrance facing the asylum with a fresco of Mother Mary and baby Jesus. Entering the church are beautiful works of art by Cavallini, Donatello, Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The church was founded by Pope Gregory the Great.
